Care
Experience gained with Erskine Hospital including repair contracts, new dayrooms, through to acting as project co-ordinator for the £15M new Erskine Home (BDP Architects) along with the special need housing projects undertaken by the practice, has resulted in detailed knowledge of the requirements for accessible housing and care facilities, particularly for the elderly.
A major change in the design of care projects in recent years has been the increasing participation of patients and staff in the design of new or converted buildings. For MAST this is a logical extension of its work with resident groups and housing associations.
The conversion of 2 wards at Hawkhead and Dykebar Hospitals has involved patients’ relatives and staff in detailed design issues, with the building of mock-ups on site where necessary.
A further aspect of the care work has been design for dementia with research at the Dementia Development Centre at Stirling University, to inform both the work at Erskine and Dykebar Hospitals as well as that for the Dixon Community in Govanhill which provides day care for the elderly indigenous and ethnic elderly of the area.
