Women’s Refuges

Parkhead

Completed in 2003 this project for Parkhead Housing Association consists of 12 flats, 10 family houses and Hostel of 12 flats with associated communal facilities. The project value was £2.8M funded by Communities Scotland, the Scottish Executive and Scottish Enterprise Glasgow.

The primary elements of the Hostel design include:

  • Lift access to all floors
  • 2 no. purpose built wheelchair accessible flats
  • High quality play facilities internally with a specially designed ‘play flat’ incorporating a kitchen, children’s and accessible toilets, baby change and wet play spaces
  • All living rooms orientated around a central landscaped courtyard and a children’s play area
  • Communal facilities including living and play rooms, laundry, offices and counselling rooms
  • High quality finishes such as hardwood and specially designed Marmoleum flooring, open boarded timber ceilings and brightly coloured, durable walls

Breathing wall construction, using prefabricated panels, filled with Warmcel insulation was incorporated, together with passive stack ventilation.

Dumbarton

The women’s Hostel comprises 10 flats for women and their children with secure single point of access to communal areas, counselling and children’s play facilities. The building wraps around a courtyard to provide a sheltered and peaceful external sitting area, with children’s outdoor play spaces located separately.
