Erskine Kennels

The Kennels, built in the 1850's, is a good example of how an historic structure can be given a new life, irrespective of its poor condition or the constraints on the layout imposed by its original use. When Erskine Hospital decided to restore the Kennels as a base for its fund raising staff, the roof had collapsed and trees were growing out of the ruins. Fortunately the floor to ceiling height was sufficiently generous to meet modern standards.

By studying other buildings erected by Lord Blantyre on his estate in the 1850s it was possible to recreate the details of the roof as well as other missing features. Temporary protection was erected in an advanced contract to allow the walls to dry out prior to careful restoration of the building. The restored Kennels are now part of the wider development of the new Care Home at Erskine, providing welcome continuity between the past and the future.
