Particular Needs Housing for Margaret Blackwood HA, Netherton
MAST are developing a 52-unit accessible housing development for Margaret Blackwood Housing Association, following a feasibility study carried out by MAST in 2004.
The first phase of housing is for an existing tenant group with a variety of special care needs. They will be housed in a fully accessible 10-unit flat block of traditional construction, one 2 in a block and three 4 in a block timber frame flats. 17 of the 24 units will be wheelchair accessible. The second phase consists of two fully accessible 14-unit flat blocks of a similar design to the traditionally constructed block in the first phase.
The Cala Sona scheme is designed to maximise the impressive views from the site toward the Clyde Valley while providing high quality care facilities in the homes of the residents.
A palette of materials including locally sourced timber cladding has been chosen to unite the project and harmonise with the rural setting.
The different housing blocks have been arranged to foster a sense of community with an emphasis on natural light and passive solar sunspaces to ensure the long term sustainability of the development. Special attention has been paid to the communal close of the 10 unit flat block to provide a heart to the building.
The first phase is due for completion in summer 2008.
